We were picked up at our hotel at 6:30 a.m. for the ride to the marina north of Cancun. I booked our adventure with the Whale Shark Daddy (Roddrigo) of Cancun Whale Shark Tours. This firm was highly rated on Trip Advisor. The cost per person was $155.

Thursday, August 29 - The Little Mexican Cooking School

And, the Gamecocks open their season

sunny 88 °F

Around 8:00, we were on the local bus to the downtown Cancun collectivo station (across from the ADO bus station). The collectivo fare to Puerto Morelos is only 20 pesos per person - that's a deal! Once we were dropped off by Highway 307, we caught a taxi to The Little Mexican Cooking School in Puerto Morelos at the Casa Caribe hotel. The class cost was $122 U.S. per person. Highly recommended.

From the website -
Our classes are an adventure in preparing and tasting authentic and modern Mexican dishes and geared for curious travellers. Get ready for a fun-filled and inspiring food day that will start with delicious pastry with Mexican organic coffee then an overview of authentic Mexican ingredients and an introduction to the cuisines of Mexico.

Next, participate in the hands-on making of 7 to 8 dishes and authentic drinks. The day will culminate in a full Mexican late lunch of the dishes you helped prepare- a true comida fuerte!

You’ll take home a recipe booklet of the dishes taught that day at The Little Mexican Cooking School as well as a souvenir apron so you can practice and impress your guests back home!

We left Puerto Morelos around 3:30 for the journey back to our hotel - taxi, collectivo, hotel zone bus. We needed to get back to watch the South Carolina Gamecocks play North Carolina to open the football season on ESPN.

Wednesday, August 28 - Scuba Diving in Cancun!

My first scuba dive was at an underwater museum!

This morning was another day at the pool with sunny weather again. We started out with a walk going North from our hotel. We walked to the punta (point) of the Cancun hotel zone. This was about 2.5 miles one way, so our total walk was 5 miles. This is a very nice section of beach for a walk and beautiful water colors.

In the afternoon, we took the bus down to Scuba Cancun. This was my FIRST ever scuba dive! I was PADI certified 19 years ago, but never did a dive after that. Two weeks before this trip, I went to Wateree Dive Center in Columbia, SC for a scuba skills update course. My dive experience in Cancun was great! Francisco, the dive master, was very helpful. We dove at the Cancun Underwater Museum (max depth about 30 feet) between Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

The museum consists of 450 permanent life-size sculptures, the largest underwater artificial art attraction in the world. The sculptures are made and designed to become artificial reefs to become coral areas for marine life. The sculptures will change over time as the coral grows and marine life colonize the sculptures.

Tuesday, August 27 - On the Beach in Cancun

Another day at Westin Lagunamar

sunny 87 °F

In the morning, we did a short walk south of the resort. The rest of the day was spent at the Westin Lagunamar pool. Another sunny day in Cancun!

We also made our own pico de gallo to take to the pool. We learned this recipe in Tulum, Mexico - tomato, onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt, pepper. Delicious!

On the way to dinner (by hotel zone bus), we first went by Scuba Cancun to see if I could book a scuba dive. There was a dive open the next afternoon to the Cancun Underwater Museum, so I booked my first actual scuba dive!

Dinner this night was at Calypso's Restaurant.. This is one of our favorite places in Cancun and it is always fun to see Felipe at Calypso's.
We also stopped by Seahorse Restaurant (just down the street from Calypso's) after meeting the friendly owner on the street. He offered us 2 for 1 margaritas, so we took him up on this offer. Looks to be a nice "locals" restaurant and the margaritas were very good.

Our first full day in Cancun was spent initially checking out our expansive resort hotel - Westin Lagunamar. Our room is extremely nice with 2 bedrooms, full kitchen and a living room. There are two huge infinity pools and a beautiful, wide beach.

This day, we did a beach walk and had lots of pool time. Today, we also booked a session at The Little Mexican Cooking School in Puerto Morelos for Thursday. website for The Little Mexican Cooking School

We competed in the poolside tennis ball toss contest and Barbara was a semi-finalist.

We also did more planning for our time in Cancun and Playa del Carmen: a possible scuba dive, watching the South Carolina Gamecocks on ESPN on Thursday and a possible skydive over the ocean in Playa del Carmen.

Dinner was at Hooter's - across the the street at La Isla Shopping Center.
